Garden Stones For Home Aquariums
You really need not spend more on your home aquariums than the amount you can shell out for livestock and other aquarium peripherals. In fact, in terms of aquarium rocks, you can almost always use rocks found on your backyard to decorate your own fish tank.
Before anything else though, you have to ensure that your garden rocks are perfectly safe for your home aquariums. What I mean about this is that you should be prepared to disinfect and test these stones first before you get to put them into your fish tanks and exposing your livestock to them. Bacteria or other chemicals from the rocks may make its way into your ecosystem and can possibly make your fishes ill and eventually killing them in the process.
First thing you got to do to prepare your garden rocks is to test them for their pH levels. To test this, you can always use the usual home products like vinegar or lime juice on your stones and keep observing for little bubbles forming on them after soaking the rocks for a few minutes. Stones are alkaline when bubbles occur, meaning that they can alter the acidity of your fish tank, and will most probably endanger your livestock if instantly put into the water.
Next, you should disinfect your backyard stones using normal boiling water. The sterilization your obtained stones will make sure that any harmful bacteria or other living organisms will not make its way into your home aquariums, therefore making sure that your stones are perfectly safe for your fishes to interact with. One thing you should remember though is not to use any chemicals when cleaning your garden rocks. Obviously, any form of chemical is fatal for your livestock and you certainly would not want them making its way into your fish tank.
